Best Wishes is the story of two young queer Chinese men who have feelings for each other and connect over the phone just as one of them is preparing to marry a woman.
In Confucian philosophy, the dominant ideology in late imperial China, which has deep roots in Chinese tradition and culture and further influences modern Chinese society, has one key virtue meant to ensure heirs. This ideology is called filial piety, which renders the LGBTQ group stressed in China. There are an estimated 30 million gay individuals in China, many of whom marry unknowing people of the opposite sex due to family and societal pressure. These marriages inevitably end in tragedy. This film aims to support and foster a critical understanding of gay marriage. It discusses how the tradition’s principles and virtues need to be reinterpreted, reassessed, and transformed to reflect perspectives from all sexualities.
